Patrick Madden doesn't much like writing about himself in the third person; therefore: I am currently studying for a Ph.D. in creative nonfiction and Twentieth-century American Literature (they wouldn't let me do Twenty-first-century) at Ohio University. My master's thesis, titled East of the River of Snails, is a book-length collection of personal essays from my two years as a missionary in Uruguay. My doctoral dissertation, titled Quotidiana (and currently in the works), is a collection of thematic, fragmentary personal essays reminiscent of the early masters Michel de Montaigne, Francis Bacon, and Charles Lamb (among others), and influenced by more contemporary writers Simone Weil, Theodor Adorno, and Eduardo Galeano (among others). Neither of these projects is yet published in book form, but a number of the individual pieces are published in literary journals. My next book-length project, tentatively titled In the Land of Painted Birds, will be a historical, flaneurish travelogue about Uruguay (someday I hope to write something about someplace else too). In order to write the book, I have recently received a Fulbright fellowship that will allow me to spend nine months (September 2002-June 2003) researching, interviewing, observing, and writing in Uruguay.
Here you'll find some samples of my writing in creative nonfiction, poetry, and other genres, as well as some news, some awards, some unsolicited, unremunerated praise of my writing from non-relatives, some links, and so forth.
My purpose in making this site is partly to show my family and friends (about the only people who care), partly in hopes of catching an interested publisher or agent (it may have worked already; I'll keep you posted), and partly to advertise myself to universities who may be hiring creative nonfiction writers. If you're one of the latter group, you may also wish to visit my online teaching portfolio and peruse my complete curriculum vitae. LosMadden.com itself is a site for my entire family, but this and the other sections I've mentioned deal with my professional pursuits. Feel free to contact me if you'd like further information.
